For UPS international shippers and importers
UPS tariff code lookup and UPS harmonized code for every SKU you ship
Each commodity on a UPS commercial invoice, and each product saved in WorldShip, needs a tariff code. Describe the product on the right to get the 6-digit HS code, the 10-digit US code and the reason, or run your whole product list in one upload.

FORM TW-01
The short answer
A UPS tariff code is the Harmonized System code of the product on each commodity line. UPS has no codes of its own: a polyester backpack is 420292 whether it ships with UPS, FedEx or the Postal Service. US filings add four digits, Schedule B for exports and HTSUS for imports. UPS gives you lookups, but the code, and the duty it sets, stay your responsibility.
The lookup is the easy part. The cost for a business is doing it again on every shipment, with different people picking different codes for the same product. The fix is a product list classified once, each code saved on the commodity record, and a written reason behind each one.

- Why this code
- Outer surface is textile, man-made fiber, travel and sports bag
Imported from Vietnam this backpack pays 17.6 percent general duty plus the 12.5 percent layer in force since July 24, 2026. A leather version of the same bag is a different line with a different rate.
UPS HS code lookup options and what each one gives you
UPS gives shippers three places to find or keep a tariff code. They are useful, and each one is built around the shipment in front of you rather than around your catalog.
-
01
UPS TradeAbility, Find Harmonized Codes
A free web tool on ups.com, signed in with a UPS ID. You pick the destination, choose a product category and search. UPS's own guide calls the result an approximate HS code, which is honest: it narrows the field, and someone still has to decide which line fits the product.
-
02
WorldShip Tariff Code Lookup
Inside WorldShip, the Tariff Code Lookup window searches by a partial tariff code or by description and drops the chosen code into the Harmonized Tariff Code Editor. Codes then live on commodity records, so the second shipment of a product reuses the first answer. Whatever went in first is what every later invoice repeats.

03
UPS as your customs broker on imports
When UPS clears an inbound shipment, it files the entry from the description and value on your invoice. The importer of record still owns the classification under 19 USC 1484, so a vague invoice description becomes UPS's guess and your liability.
Which code UPS needs depends on the direction
Six digits for the invoice and ten for the US filing behind it
Exporting from the US
The commercial invoice carries the 6-digit HS code the destination needs. When one Schedule B line on the shipment is worth more than $2,500, or the goods need an export license, the Electronic Export Information is filed with the 10-digit Schedule B or HTSUS number (15 CFR 30.6 and 30.37).
Shipping into the EU
Express carriers file safety and security data for every parcel entering the EU, and that filing needs a 6-digit HS code per item. From July 1, 2026, low-value consignments pay a flat 3 euro duty for each different tariff classification in the parcel, so every code on the invoice now carries a price.
Importing into the US with UPS
A US entry needs the full 10-digit HTSUS code, and the $800 de minimis exemption, suspended since August 29, 2025, was made indefinite by a CBP rule on June 24, 2026, so even small UPS imports are entered with a code and duty. In 2026 that code decides whether Section 301, Section 232 or the July 24 layer attaches.
UPS tariff codes from UPS tools compared with a catalog classifier
For a few shipments a month the UPS tools may be all you need. The question for a business is what happens when the same 300 products go out every week from three packing benches.
| Tool | What you get | Access | Where it wins |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPS TradeAbility | Approximate HS code by destination and product category, plus landed cost and restricted party tools | Free, UPS ID sign-in | A single shipment to a new destination |
| WorldShip Tariff Code Lookup | Search by code or description, code saved on the commodity record | Inside WorldShip | Reusing a code once it is right |
| Census Schedule B search | 10-digit US export codes by keyword | Public | The official wording for Schedule B |
| Licensed customs broker | Documented review of one product | Usually $50 to $200 per product | Contested products and the entry itself |
| TariffWise | 6-digit HS, 10-digit Schedule B and HTSUS, the reasoning, a runner-up code and 2026 US import duty by origin | From $59 a month, bulk CSV on Growth | The whole SKU list classified once, ready to load into commodity records |
Where UPS stays ahead: its tools are free and sit inside the shipping flow, and TradeAbility estimates destination landed cost for the shipment you are building. Where they fall short for a business is the first answer. An approximate code chosen from a category list, saved to a WorldShip commodity, is then repeated on every invoice until someone notices, and none of the tools records why that code was picked.
Harmonized codes for products businesses ship with UPS
Six-digit starting points from the US Harmonized Tariff Schedule. The exact product still decides, so run anything unusual through the classifier at the top of the page.
420292
Backpacks and sports bags, textile or plastic outer
The outer surface decides the line, not the lining. A leather outer moves the bag to 420291.
610910
Cotton T-shirts, knitted
Knitted cotton tees and tanks. Woven shirts sit in Chapter 62 instead, and a polyester tee is 610990.
640411
Sports shoes with textile uppers
Athletic and training shoes with rubber or plastic soles and textile uppers. A leather upper moves the shoe to 6403.
870899
Other motor vehicle parts
Parts with no more specific line in 8708. Brakes, gearboxes and wheels each have their own subheading first.
848210
Ball bearings
Complete ball bearings. Loose balls, rollers and races are separate lines in 8482.
950300
Toys, puzzles and scale models
Most toys sit here. Video game consoles and festive articles have their own headings in Chapter 95.
340600
Candles
Candles, tapers and the like. A candle in a decorative glass holder can still be 3406 if the candle gives the essential character.
210690
Supplements and food preparations
Where most dietary supplements in capsule or powder form land, though some move to Chapter 30 as medicaments.
392410
Plastic tableware and kitchenware
Plastic plates, cups and kitchen tools. Silicone bakeware is usually 3924 too, while steel kitchenware is 7323.
What a wrong tariff code costs a UPS shipper
Outbound, the cost lands with your customer. Their customs office charges duty off the code you declared, so an understated code comes back as a reassessment and an overstated one as a buyer who paid too much and orders less next time. In the EU each different classification in a low-value parcel carries a 3 euro duty from July 1, 2026, under Council Regulation (EU) 2026/382. A parcel held because the description and the code disagree is a delivery promise you broke.
Inbound, the cost is yours. A product made in China can carry its general rate, a Section 301 list rate and the 12.5 percent layer that took effect on July 24, 2026, and the code decides which of them apply. Neighboring lines often differ by 20 or more points of duty on every unit. The import duty calculator shows the stack for a code and origin before you place the order.
When a paid classifier earns its keep
If you send a few international parcels a month, TradeAbility is enough and this page is not for you. The plans pay off when you have more than a few dozen distinct products, more than one person prepares shipments, and you either export to markets that check codes or import stock into the US. One month of Growth classifies a 1,000-line product list with a written reason per line, and the codes then go into WorldShip commodities or whatever system prints your UPS invoices.
How to get a UPS tariff code for every product at once
Step 1
Export the product list
SKUs, descriptions, materials and country of manufacture from your ERP, store or the spreadsheet behind your WorldShip commodities.
Step 2
Upload the CSV
Each row comes back with the 6-digit HS code, the 10-digit US code, a confidence level, the reasoning and a runner-up.
Step 3
Settle the flagged rows
Most corrections need one fact: the material, part or finished good, or the power rating.
Step 4
Save codes on the commodity records
Update the products your UPS shipments pull from, so every invoice carries the same checked code.
What a tariff code sheet costs a UPS shipper
A product is classified once and reused on every invoice, so most businesses need one month of a plan and then only new SKUs. Broker figures use the usual $50 to $200 band for a documented review of one product.
| Business | Lookup per shipment | Broker review per product | TariffWise |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 SKUs, ships to Canada and the EU every week | Hours a month, codes vary by who packs | $3,000 to $12,000 | $59, one month of Starter (100 classifications) |
| 750 products for a brand that exports and imports | Weeks, no record of why | Not realistic per product | $199, one month of Growth with bulk CSV |
| A 3PL running UPS international for many clients | Not realistic | Priced per client | $499 a month on Business, 10,000 classifications, 20 seats |
Full plan details are on the HS code classification pricing page. Teams that also ship with FedEx can reuse the same sheet through the FedEx HS code lookup, USPS labels bought on Pirate Ship take the same 6 digits as the harmonization number for Pirate Ship, and developers can pull codes into a shipping integration with the HS code API.
UPS tariff code questions
How do I find the tariff code for UPS?
Describe the product by what it is, what it is made of and what it does, then match it to a 6-digit Harmonized System code. UPS offers TradeAbility on ups.com and a Tariff Code Lookup inside WorldShip. For a business with more than a few dozen products, classify the whole product list once and save each code against the SKU.
Does UPS require a harmonized code?
UPS asks you to include a Harmonized Tariff Code or Schedule B number on the commercial invoice to speed clearance and avoid delays and extra charges. Some filings make it mandatory: a US export line worth more than $2,500 needs a 10-digit code in the Electronic Export Information, and EU safety filings need a 6-digit HS code per item.
What is the UPS harmonized code?
It is the Harmonized System code for the goods on a commodity line, the same number every carrier uses. UPS does not have its own code system. The first six digits are recognized worldwide, and US shipments add four more: Schedule B on exports, the HTSUS code on imports.
Where do I enter the tariff code in UPS WorldShip?
WorldShip keeps tariff codes on commodity records. You add or look up a code in the Harmonized Tariff Code Editor, reached from the international commodity tools, and the Tariff Code Lookup window searches by a partial code or a description. Once a commodity is saved with its code, each shipment of that product pulls the same code.
Is UPS TradeAbility free?
Yes. UPS states that TradeAbility services are available free of charge, and you sign in with a UPS ID. Its Find Harmonized Codes tool asks for the destination and a product category, and UPS describes the result as an approximate HS code, so a business should still check the code for each product it ships regularly.
Who is responsible if the tariff code on a UPS shipment is wrong?
The shipper and the importer of record, not UPS. You certify the commercial invoice on an export, and on a US import the importer must use reasonable care in classification under 19 USC 1484 even when UPS clears the goods as broker. A wrong code means wrong duty, a hold, or a penalty later.
Have a checked tariff code on every product before the next UPS international pickup.
