For Etsy shops shipping abroad
Tariff number for Etsy listings and the Etsy tariff code lookup for every order you ship abroad
The tariff number field in Etsy's customs step decides what your buyer pays at the door, and since July 2026 the EU bills a flat duty for each distinct code in the parcel. Describe the item on the right and get the code, the reason it fits and, for supplies you import, the full US duty.

FORM TW-01
The short answer
The tariff number Etsy asks for is the Harmonized System code of the item: six digits for parcels going to the EU, the UK, Canada or Australia, typed without periods, so a sterling silver ring is 711311 and a soy candle is 340600. Etsy leaves the field optional, but its help center warns that EU-bound packages without a code may be delayed or returned.
One listing is a two-minute job in the free demo above. A shop with 200 listings in five materials, shipping abroad every week, is where a classifier pays for itself: one CSV run, a code and a written reason for every listing, and no guessing at the label screen.
Where the Etsy tariff number goes
A US Etsy shop meets the tariff number in three places, and only the first one is on Etsy itself.
1
Etsy label, customs details
When you buy an international label in Shop Manager, the customs step asks for a description, a value and a tariff number for each item. Etsy has said it is working on suggesting a number from the listing category, which is a starting point, not a classification of what you actually made.
2
Labels you buy outside Etsy
Pirate Ship, USPS Click-N-Ship and the express carriers all have a tariff or harmonization number field on the customs form. It is the same six digits, so the code you settle on once should follow the item to every label tool.
3
Supplies and stock you import
Beads, blanks, wicks, mug sublimation stock and packaging bought from overseas suppliers enter the US on a 10-digit HTS code. With the $800 de minimis exemption gone, even a small restock order needs a real code and pays the full 2026 duty.
Etsy tariff numbers for the categories that ship abroad most
Six digits, typed the way the customs form wants them. Material decides most of these, so a listing that mixes materials should go through the classifier above.
711311
Silver jewelry
Rings, necklaces and earrings of sterling or fine silver, plated or not. Gold and platinum pieces are 711319.
711719 or 711790
Costume and beaded jewelry
Base metal pieces, including gold-plated brass, are 711719. Beads of glass, plastic or clay with no metal of value usually go to 711790.
391990 or 491199
Stickers
Flat, self-adhesive vinyl stickers are plastics, 391990. Printed paper stickers are other printed matter, 491199. Planner sheets of paper stickers stay with paper.
340600
Candles
Soy, beeswax and paraffin candles, including candles in a jar or tin. A decorative holder sold empty has its own code by material.
691200 or 691110
Ceramic mugs and dishes
Stoneware and earthenware tableware is 691200. Porcelain is 691110, and the difference is the body of the clay, not the glaze.
491191
Art prints and photo prints
Printed pictures, designs and photographs. An original hand-painted canvas is 970191, a different chapter with its own rules.
611710
Knitted scarves and shawls
Hand-knitted or machine-knitted scarves. Woven scarves move to heading 6214, split by fiber.
340111
Handmade soap bars
Toilet soap in bars or shaped pieces. Liquid soap is classified separately, and so are bath bombs.
420292
Tote bags of fabric
Shopping and tote bags with an outer surface of textile, such as cotton canvas. Leather totes go to 420221.
Why the Etsy tariff number became a pricing decision in 2026
For years the code on a 40 dollar parcel to Germany was paperwork nobody read. Two changes ended that. Postal operators working under Universal Postal Union rules now expect at least a six-digit HS code for each commercial item on the customs declaration, and the parcels with vague or missing codes are the ones pulled for inspection. Then on July 1, 2026 the EU ended its duty exemption for parcels worth up to 150 euros and replaced it with a flat 3 euro customs duty for each different tariff classification in the parcel, under Council Regulation (EU) 2026/382, running until July 1, 2028.
That makes the code a multiplier. A gift set with a candle, a mug and a print, entered under three codes, carries 9 euros of duty before VAT. The buyer sees that charge at checkout or at the door, and a surprise bill on a handmade gift is how a five-star sale turns into a refused parcel and a case. Getting the code right, and getting it the same on every order, is now part of pricing an international listing.
The supplies you buy abroad need the 10-digit code
Most Etsy shops that sell abroad also buy abroad. The six digits on an outbound label do not work for the US side. A restock of jewelry findings, blank tumblers or candle jars from China enters the US on a 10-digit HTSUS code, and the duty now stacks: the general rate, any Section 301 duty from the original China lists, and since July 24, 2026 a further 12.5 percent layer for goods of China and Vietnam. TariffWise returns that 10-digit code, each duty layer and the landed cost per unit, so you can reprice the listing before the box arrives.
Etsy's own tools compared with a classifier
Etsy is adding help, and for a shop that ships abroad twice a month it may be enough. This is what each option actually does today.
| Option | Who it is for | What you get | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|---|
| Etsy tariff number field | Every shop buying an international label on Etsy | A free text field per item, optional | You choose the code. The field cannot be read or filled through the Etsy API, so there is no bulk update |
| Etsy US Estimated Tariffs calculator | Sellers outside the US shipping into the US | An AI-suggested HS code and estimated US duty, powered by Zonos, in beta | Not built for US shops shipping out. Etsy says it does not guarantee the codes, and early testers reported no support for variation listings |
| Census Schedule B search, USITC schedule | Anyone willing to read the schedule | Free, official lists of codes | You still pick the line yourself, nothing records why, and there is no duty math for your imports |
| TariffWise | Shops with dozens to thousands of listings, and their supply imports | 6-digit HS and 10-digit HTSUS codes, the reasoning, runner-up codes, 2026 US duty and bulk CSV | A paid plan for bulk work. It does not buy the label for you; you paste the code into Etsy or your label tool |
How to get a tariff number for every Etsy listing at once
Step 1
Download your listings
Etsy's Download Data option under Settings exports a CSV of your active listings with titles, descriptions and tags.
Step 2
Add the material
If the title does not say it, add a column with the main material: sterling silver, plated brass, soy wax, stoneware, vinyl.
Step 3
Upload and review
Each row comes back with a 6-digit code, the 10-digit US code, a confidence level and the reason. Unclear rows are listed first.
Step 4
Keep one master sheet
Paste the six digits into Etsy and your label tool. The same code goes out on every order of that listing.
What classifying an Etsy shop costs
You classify a listing once and reuse the code on every order and every renewal, so the cost is usually one month of a plan. Broker figures are the usual per-product review band.
| Shop | Broker review per product | TariffWise |
|---|---|---|
| 80 listings, jewelry and candles | $4,000 to $16,000 at $50 to $200 each | $59 for one month of Starter, 100 classifications |
| 700 listings across several materials | Not realistic per product | $199 for one month of Growth, 1,000 classifications with bulk CSV |
| A print-on-demand or supply shop with 5,000 listings | Not realistic per product | $499 a month on Business, 10,000 classifications, 20 seats |
Full plan details are on the HS code classification pricing page. If you also sell on eBay, the same sheet covers the HS tariff code eBay lookup, labels bought through Pirate Ship use the same six digits in the harmonization number for Pirate Ship field, and a shop that also runs its own store should read the best HS code classification tool for Shopify.
Etsy tariff number questions, answered
What is a tariff number on Etsy?
It is the Harmonized System code for the item, the number customs uses to decide duty and import rules. Etsy shows it as an optional tariff number field in the customs details when you buy an international label. For the EU and most other countries six digits are enough. A shipment entering the US needs the full 10-digit HTS code.
Where do I find the tariff number for my Etsy item?
Describe the item by what it is made of and what it does, then match it to a heading and a 6-digit subheading. You can search the Census Schedule B tool or the USITC schedule by hand, or paste the description into the classifier at the top of this page, which returns the code and the reasoning. For a whole shop, upload your listings as a CSV.
Is a tariff number required on Etsy?
Etsy keeps the field optional in the label flow, but its own help center says packages entering the EU need a tariff code and that packages without one may be delayed or returned. Since July 1, 2026 the EU also charges a flat 3 euro duty for each different tariff classification in a low-value parcel, so the code now sets the price your buyer pays.
What is the tariff number for jewelry on Etsy?
It depends on the metal. Silver jewelry is 711311, gold or platinum jewelry 711319, and costume jewelry of base metal 711719. Beaded pieces of glass or plastic with no precious metal usually go to 711790. A plated brass necklace is base metal, not silver, which is the most common Etsy mistake.
What is the tariff number for stickers on Etsy?
Vinyl and other plastic stickers that are flat and self-adhesive go to 391990. Paper stickers that are printed go to 491199, other printed matter. CBP decides between them on the material and on whether the sticker really adheres to smooth surfaces, so a paper sticker with a plastic laminate needs a closer look.
Does Etsy have a tariff number lookup?
Etsy has a US Estimated Tariffs calculator in beta for sellers outside the US, powered by Zonos, that suggests an HS code from a short description. Etsy states that it does not guarantee those codes. US sellers shipping abroad still choose the tariff number themselves on each label, and the field cannot be filled through the Etsy API.
Give every listing a tariff number you can stand behind, before the next international order ships.
